when to start sleep training
You can and should start supporting your child in developing healthy sleep habits from birth. My Newborn Sleep Support Package is perfect for babies under 8 weeks, and does not involve true sleep training. The earlier you start, the easier it is for both you and your baby.
If you start sleep training between 8 and 12 weeks old, you can actually prevent the four month regression and the need for more involved sleep training. When babies are given an opportunity before 4 months to practice their natural ability to put themselves to sleep on their own, without any intervention, it is a much simpler process, and more involved sleep training can often be avoided.
The truth is that it is much, much more difficult on the baby and the parent when we wait to first begin working on independent sleep skills after the 4 month mark. Around 16 weeks, baby’s sleep habits become more established and long-term, which is why people call it the 4 month regression. That isn’t to say that the habits can’t be changed after that point, but it often takes longer and there is often more crying involved.
However, I work with children up to 4 years old, and it is NEVER too late to improve your child’s sleep. The best time to start is today!
